Planning a photoshoot? Whether it’s your first time in front of the camera or you are an experienced expert, taking the time to prepare can get your shoot from “meh” to magazine-worthy!
The best shots happen when you are relaxed, confident, and having fun, and at FG Photography, we make sure of that! So, this is our supreme guide to perfecting that picture-perfect moment.
Plan Your Concept
Before the camera even clicks, it helps to figure out what type of vibe you’re aiming for. Ask yourself: Is this a lifestyle shoot, a fashion editorial, a branding session? Do you have a particular theme or mood in mind? Where is your shoot location—studio, urban, retro or nature? When you have a vision, outfit selection, poses, and props are easier.

Pick the Perfect Outfit(s)
Your outfit sets the tone! Focus on colors that flatter your skin tone and avoiding busy prints. Put on something comfortable yet cool to inspire confidence. If there are multiple looks, bring options and any associated accessories, these help bring your photos to life. PRO TIP: Avoid logos or distracting prints unless it adds to the concept.
Prep Your Skin & Hair
You don’t need a glam squad, but a tiny bit of self-care pays off. Drink water and moisturize your skin. Get a good night’s sleep to avoid looking tired. If you’re wearing makeup, keep it fresh and natural to highlight your features. Hair should be clean and done according to your shoot theme.
Practice Posing (Yes, Really!)
Often times, people tend to feel awkward in front of a camera. If that is you, this tips may help: Strike a pose in front of a mirror and search for your best angles. You can also find some posing inspo on Pinterest or Instagram. Practice smiling naturally in photos, because forced grins can be quite obvious, then move, the slight tilts of the head and body shifts create dynamic, natural shots.
Bring the Right Energy
Energy is very important to have a successful photo shoot. A good energy can never be never be overemphasized. Set your mindset to a photo shoot success, your mentality can make or mar your photos. Think of the camera as a friend and rely on your photographer. (Seriously, we got you!) Listen to your favorite hype music ahead of time before or during the shoot. Recruit a friend for moral support (and a behind-the-scenes snap!). Have fun – the best shots always come with natural smiles and laughter. Also, pack a photo shoot survival kit, which may include extra clothing and accessories, makeup for touch-ups, hairbrush, water & light snacks, safety pins & fashion tape (wardrobe malfunctions happen!)
